The exchange in art between China and Japan has been very active. Japanese painting has a close relationship with Chinese painting. It is generally accepted that Japanese painting has an origin of the “heavy color” technique of Gongbi Chinese painting. For Chinese painting, how it could be innovated and modernized is always a significant concern in Chinese art. Within this spectrum of art history, the affection of Japanese art cannot be ignored. In contrast to Chinese painting, Japanese painting has always been absorbing other cultures as nutrients, however, the question of either inheritance or innovation did not become a burden to the development of the art form.
Seiko Fujioka learned Japanese painting as her art career launching point. While studying in the art institute, she incarnated the way to fuse traditional material with modern techniques, for example: collage, mixed media, to be freely applied to her art creation. In her artworks, there are traces of the beauty of Japanese painting; the composition has a style of the Art Nouveau, which is resplendent with vivid colors and rich details; and the image in her artwork is theatrical and full of free imagination. Apart from her art, the experience and discovery from her job as a designer of a fashion brand also adds a sense of trend in her work. The various impressions interlace and become a lively patchwork of scenery of modern life. The hybrid character of the artwork happens to reflect our modern life today in a metropolis.
Artist Biography
Seiko Fujioka was born in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, Japan in 1982. She graduated from one of the most famous art institutes in Japan, Tama Art University, major in Japanese Painting. Two years later she was graduated from Painting Graduate Course from the same school. She learned Japanese painting since studying in high school, and she was often awarded. Her art wanders between design and fine art. After graduation, she worked as a designer in the fashion brand in Japan, “facade green” of United Arrows. In the meantime, she persisted to produce paintings.
