BEIJING, January, 2008 – Two new group shows at Red Gate Gallery (Watchtower) and 798 / Red Gate Gallery (Dashanzi) feature selected works by significant Red Gate Gallery artists.
The two exhibitions offer a thought-provoking stimulus to critics, viewers and collectors to interrogate the different perspectives offered by the artists represented in the exhibitions.
Different Perspectives #1 at the Red Gate Gallery, Watchtower addresses the responses of artists: Han Qing, Chen Yufei, Lu Peng, Wang Yuping, Wang Lifeng and Zhou Jirong to their immediate environment. At times, there are direct references to traditional art forms and in other works the structural and technical considerations refer more obliquely to a Chinese aesthetic. The links to European Surrealism, Cubism and expressionism are devices employed by these artists to invent new and distinctly Chinese iconography and symbolism.
They use different perspectives or lenses to view the world and present personal interpretations through the medium of paint.
Different Perspectives #2 exhibition at 798 / Red Gate Gallery addresses the way different artists have used the grid layout as a formalist or functional structure to express universal principles of continuity, connectedness and intersection. The interplay between the realist representations of Zhou Jun and the portrayal of spiritual abstractions in the works of Zheng Xuewu, Jiang Weitao and Shi Zhongying create a dialogue of difference and similarity – not only in art but in the way we view the world. The systems of reference used by individuals and cultures may vary in form but remain constant in the classical concepts of order, harmony and rationality.
The exhibitions run in both galleries from 1 March to 5 April 2008. |
