“Olympic & Paralympic Heroes”
Solo Painting exhibition by international artist Gregory Burns
Creation Gallery, Beijing
August 9 to 17, 2008
Ritan Dong Rd.( East Road Ritan ),Chaoyang Dist.,Beijing 100020,PRC
Some say that oil and vinegar don’t mix; but tell that to a master salad chef. Some say that athletics and art are opposite activities; but tell that to Gregory Burns who has combined these two passions for forty years. Since the age of five, the American born international artist and world record holding swimmer, trained in both sports and painting. During his 30 year swimming and painting careers he has set five world records in three Paralympic Games and has exhibited his paintings in galleries and museums around the world. Burns believes that, “With a strong body and spirit, an artist can infuse the canvas with power and meaning”. Maintaining a disciplined and healthy lifestyle adds depth to the artist and athlete.
With his most recent series of paintings, “Olympic & Paralympic Heroes”, Burns synthesizes his understanding of painting and sports. Launching into the canvas with the same strength and determination as the pole-vaulter, with bold gestures and colors Burns expresses the pulsating energy of an athlete charging forward or taking aim at the target.
During the Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, Burns captured numerous Gold and Silver medals in the swimming pool. Mustering up the same discipline and passion that once drove him in competitions, Burns now pours his energy into his art and exhibits his paintings throughout Asia and America. During the 2008 Games at the Creation Gallery in Beijing, Burns will be exhibiting his paintings saluting his fellow Olympic and Paralympic athletes. “I missed not making the Athens Games so I am very excited to be involved in the Beijing Games from an artistic point of view,” Burns confides. Combining his love of art with sport is what makes this series unique and moving. Having experienced the anticipation of the starting gun and the glory of achieving victory, Burns has felt it all. As a world class athlete and artist, Burns stands on the podium for all of us and paints with the passion that has earned him gold and silver around the world.
Burns, who was stricken with polio at the age of one, has devoted his life to art and sports. Ambulating with crutches and braces having been paralyzed in both legs, Burns’ arms and hands have defined his life. The strength he develops through walking and sports he then channels into his paintings combining passion and power. His bold and colorful semi-abstract mixed media paintings express the power of the human spirit.
The opening reception at Creation Gallery for, “Olympic & Paralympic Heroes” will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2008 and the artist will be in attendance. The show runs through August 17, 2008.
