BEIJING September 10, 2007 – Sheng Qi, renowned artist from the ‘Generation of ’89,’ is best known for his unique expressions of personal protest. He continues in this vein in his upcoming Red Gate show, History in Black and Red. Using found images from the media that provide journalistic documentation of historic events, Sheng Qi recreates them in diptych format, each panel duplicating the same image in monotones of black and red respectively. He employs a dripping technique with the acrylic paint that lends the objective images a psychological intensity—recalling notions of violence and mourning.
History of Black and Red opens at 798 / Red Gate Gallery on Saturday, October 20, 2007 with a reception from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. The show runs through November 11.
