    ...specialist
We are unusual in that we run more than 30 different programmes in the specialist areas of art, design, media and communication.

Our mix of disciplines creates a lively academic community. If you are a potential animator or film director you can mix with others who plan careers in journalism, glass, fashion, graphics, photography, sculpture, interior design and design management. Not only is this culturally enriching, but it helps you see your own discipline in a broader context.

The practical benefits of a focus on linked disciplines are immense. Art and design are expensive subjects to teach, in terms of the facilities required. Since we have decided to focus on a specialist area, we do not need to diversify the resources we provide to support your work.

    .

    ...international
We have a thriving international community of students from over 60 countries. These students play an important role in encouraging cultural diversity and in shaping our creative learning environment. In addition, we are involved in developing international collaborative links and currently have student exchange programmes with organisations in Japan, Korea and the USA.

The international dimension is also brought to the Institute through other cultural activities. For example,Textural Space, a major touring exhibition of large-scale work by leading Japanese textile artists, and its successor project and exhibitionThrough the Surfacewere organised by us.

    .

    ...creative
Every year, our students win a range of national and international awards.

It is difficult to measure creativity but competition success is one yardstick. Our students regularly win scholarships, bursaries and awards, which you can read about in the 'Our students' successes' section. To view, please click on the link in the 'Similar Articles' section on the right hand side. However, you can judge for yourself and hopefully be influenced by the work on show when you visit us. From visitor's comments, it seems that they notice a professionalism and individuality that helps them to make up their minds.

    .

...investing in the quality of our students' experience
Our campuses at Epsom and Farnham have purpose built library and learning resource centres (LLRC). The learning resources also encompass a wide range of computer facilities. We put a lot of emphasis on IT skills - including the tracking of information through sophisticated international databases and the use of specialist software for 3D modelling, image manipulation, website design and animation.

Quality is also delivered through our teaching. where we can measure our standards we do, particularly in matters relating to teaching quality and learning outcome. We try to make clear to you what we can and cannot do. We want to offer you more than students have had in the past and we are endeavouring to develop our programmes. The Quality Assurance Agency can provide more information through their website, while further information on our teaching quality can be accessed at the Hero website. To view both sites, please click the links in the 'Other Websites' section on the right-hand side.

    .

    ...employability
The vast majority of our students who left in 2004 were in employment, self-employment or on advanced courses by the end of the year.

We not only develop the talent of our students, we make sure that talent can operate in the outside world. the designers, artists and journalists that we produce may be creatively brilliant, but they also need to be able to present themselves well, persuade people, argue their case and negotiate their way out of difficulties.

You may be making quite a financial commitment to come to the Institute. We set out to give you skills that have real currency - which may include business and professional practice, as well as other practical skills including presentation and report writing. These studies help you understand the business die of industries that are based on creativity, talent and ideas.

The broad skills you learn can either support a vertical career path in your chosen subject, or else enable you to be more opportunist in a rapidly changing employment market.

    .

...community of staff, students and graduates
All our teaching resources and staff are dedicated to art, design, media and communications.

Our students work in attractive environments, located near town centres, on modern campuses where we try to provide everything you need. Students at both Epsom and Farnham are close enough to London to benefit from what it offers.

In our approach to the learning environment we try to encourage you to become a successful part of our community. We aim to develop your capacity to learn under your own steam by using a system where the emphasis shifts from teaching to learning as the programme progresses.

We use this approach for several reasons. We feel that students benefit from learning things for themselves once we have taught the techniques. Another reason is that we are preparing students for an unknown future. We are educating you for ten years hence, when you are in mid-career and industry will have changed. So we endeavour to equip you to know how to master new situations, as well as mastering the situation as it is today.

    .

    ...diverse research activity
Many of our staff are research specialists in their area.

Their investigations into new developments extend our knowledge of the industries our students enter, contribute to theoretical understanding and debate, as well as enhance our understanding of professional practice. One of the benefits of this research is that we are better able to ensure all our programmes are up-to-date and relevant.

We believe that the study of art, design and media is a scholarly activity, for students as well as staff. You need to understand the historical, theoretical and social context in which you are working. We want you not only to be able to 'do' but also to understand 'what', 'where' and 'why'.

Over recent years we have introduced research study opportunities to our portfolio of programmes. We have established the Animation Research Centre, welcomed the internationally renowned Crafts Study Centre, built on the reputation of our Centre for Sustainable Design as a leading European authority in sustainability, and developed an Anglo-Japanese Textile Research Centre.

We also continue to undertake research to help our understanding of, and response to, the needs and demands of employers, business, industry and commerce.

    .

...taking a leading role in the cultural economy
The Surrey Institute has a thriving Business Development Unit and is actively engaged with business in a number of different ways.

Links with the world of work vary from programme to programme. Outside contacts are not always widely available - for example, in a diverse and small-scale industry like metalwork - but while the scale of the contacts may vary, the importance we place on them does not. these links are integrated into the planning of every programme.

We expose you to the thinking and experience of industry professionals who work as programme advisers, sessional tutors and guest lecturers. These are people who are well respected in their field. Recent visitors and tutors have included film producers, graphic designers, animators and fashion designers.

We believe in preparing our students for the world of work. When you go into industry you will immediately be faced with the disciplines of the market and need to understand how things work. We aim to help you understand the business requirements of industries that are based on creativity, talent and ideas.
